When:
Fermentation & Vinegars with Steve Guy, aka 'The Hungry Guy'.
Steve is a personal chef, food consultant and food educator based in Shrewsbury. His background in the food industry is varied and unique and that shows in the food he loves to cook. Describes style of food as ‘Pretty Simple Food’ – simple, accessible food using great produce, cooked using simple techniques and presented in a comforting and laid-back way.
Worked as a Head Chef in Jamie Oliver’s cookery schools in London and this is where he honed his skills and passion for laid back, simple, approachable food, while also developing a passion for passing on my skills and knowledge through teaching cookery lessons.
More recently, worked in product development as both a chef and a product development manager – launching food retail products for Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, M&S, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, B&M & Home Bargains; as well as brands such as Nando’s, KFC, Reds BBQ Sauces & Walls.
This experience gave him a real insight into what people wanted to eat on a national scale as well as allowing him to look at food in a more fun and creative way.
It also opened his eyes to the very real issues that the food industry faces in terms of climate, sociological issues and ultimately it highlighted our ever increasingly strained relationship with food, as human beings.
It was this that pushed him to set up as ‘The Hungry Guy,’ and focus his business on not only championing high quality local produce but also to provide people with information that could help them make better food decisions.
Main message is that cooking fresh food is the first step in helping alleviate the current pressure the food industry is putting on the environment.
Steve works a lot with ‘Slow Food,’ and is currently their ‘England Person of the Year.’
